If you are new to the re-ordering system when you are at a bar then you may not know about the official bartenders code of how to get a refill. This technique will save your bartender valuable time so that he/she can serve you more quickly and get to other customers seamlessly.
Once you have polished off your drink there are a few options you can take to get to your next round or to end your drinking journey.
If you are trying to reorder a drink and a need a repeat the best way to get a refill right away is to place your drink inside of the well. The well is the little drain area right behind the bar table it is a catch all for extra liquid and serves as a drain in case you spill your drink. Every bar must have one to pass ABC (Alcohol Beverage Control) standards. Just place your empty glass into the well in front of you and with a little patience your drink will be refilled right away because it is easier for your server to see the cup inside of the well for instant fill. Many time your bartender or server might ask if you want the same thing or if you want a different drink so if you get the same thing over and over the next time you will not have to ask he/she will pick up your ordering rhythm and even the timing of how long it takes you to finish your drink for an automatic refill each time. this is the best way to clone the current drink you are having and usually not used to change the type of drink you want for your next round.
If you are looking to end your drinking and close out your bar tab or just stop your alcohol train just place your cup on the bar right next to the well and not in it. Most of the time this will notify the bartender that you are done and once they come to pick up your cup or glass they may ask if you need water, or something else since this also signifies that you may be looking to change the type of drink you want.
If you are wanting to just change the type of drink you have from a mixed drink to a beer then you can place the drink by the well or in the well of the bar but you will need to nurse it until the bartender get back to you. Of you put the glass or bottle in the well you run the risk of the bartender serving you the same thing and if you put it next to the well they might think you are done for the day
or night so you will need to wait and it is like placing a brand new order all over again.
Using these tip will make re-ordering your drinks fast and easy, especially if you have a rhythm to your drinking habit, and doesn’t matter how complicated you make it as long as you are consistent. Maybe for every drink or beer your order you want one glass of water right after or during it, a good bartender will pick this pattern up and if you go to the same place or have the same bartender over and over again they begin to remember these patterns for next time and years to come.
And like always make sure you don’t drink too much alcohol, skip out on your tab, or forget your friendly bartender.
